Product Review – The BlackBerry Q5 Smartphone

Blackberry Q5 Product Review

The BlackBerry Q5 is a mid-range smartphone that combines the fluidity and speed of BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Z10 with the convenience of having a hardware QWERTY keyboard. It has a noticeable plastic body and is light in weight, measuring about 120g. It has rounded corners and is slim enough to fit in any pocket. It has dimensions of about 4.71 × 2.63 × 0.41 inches and is available in a variety of impressive colours including black, pink, white and red.

The Screen

The BlackBerry Q5 boasts of a clear 3.1-inch LCD touch screen with a 720 x 720 resolution (329ppi), explaining why its graphics, texts, videos, and photos appear sharp and detailed. The screen offers superb viewing angles and fine sunlight legibility.

The Camera

The handset comes with a 5MP rear and a 2MP front camera. The rear camera is accompanied by a powerful LED flash. It offers auto-focus, 1080p HD recording, 5x digital zoom, and image stabilisation. The front camera offers 720p HD video recording, fixed focus, 3x digital zoom, and image stabilisation.

The BlackBerry Q5 has a basic music player that is capable of listing audio collection by genre, album, and artiste name. Its powerful built-in speaker and earphone port allow you to listen to music with your friends or quietly without disturbing others. Its 8GB internal memory enables it to store more than 500 music files. In addition, it has a memory card slot on the left side that is capable of supporting cards up to 32GB in size, allowing you to store more of your favourite video and music files.

The handset has a 2GB RAM and a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor that enable it to be very fast and responsive, especially when you are browsing the Internet or playing your favourite games. The phone is also capable of multitasking, meaning that you can listen to music while surfing the Internet or reading your messages with a lot of ease.

The Keyboard

The BlackBerry Q5’s QWERTY keyboard has isolated keys that offer you faster typing speed as compared to its rivals. The layout enables you to move your fingers evenly and rhythmically over the keyboard as you type at your own pace. In simple terms, the QWERTY keyboard is specifically designed to greatly increase the speed at which you can text messages, update your social networking sites, write e-mails, or perform any other type of data entry. In addition, their sturdy nature allows them to last for a long period of time.

Blackberry Q5 front and backUser Interface

Just like the BlackBerry Q10, the BlackBerry Q5 uses OS 10.1, only that it has some minor improvements. It does not include the dark theme support in native applications such as the contacts screen, calendar, file manager, and call logs. The handset features smaller active frames in the home screen panel. Navigation still incorporates swipe gestures.

Once you unlock the screen, you gain access to a list of apps neatly arranged in a 4×3 grid. You can swipe to the right to view more icons or to the left to go to the BlackBerry Hub that collects all your e-mails, messages, and WhatsApp chats. The BlackBerry OS 10.1 also offers a number of keyboard and application shortcuts. For instance, you can use the ‘T’ key to go to the top of a page, the ‘B’ key to go to the bottom, and the ‘N’ key to go to the next page.

The BlackBerry Q5 is both 3G and 4G-enabled, providing you with super-fast network speeds. In addition, the handset comes with Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, and NFC technology. You can toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections in the pull-down settings bar that appears when you are viewing the home screen or the app list pages.

With its Wi-Fi capability, your BlackBerry Q5 can easily share its Internet connection with other devices such as laptops and tablets. However, note that this eats into your data allowance and runs down the battery.

The handset’s USB port is serves two vital purposes: for charging the phone and hooking it up to a laptop or computer. Before you start gaining access to the contents of the handset, you have to install the BlackBerry Link software on your laptop/computer.

Another interesting thing about the BlackBerry Q5 is that it supports DLNA wireless media streaming, allowing you to stream content such as photos, videos, and music to other DLNA-enabled devices such as games consoles, TVs, and computers.

Unlike the BlackBerry Q10 and Z10, the BlackBerry Q5 runs on a 2,180mAh non-removable battery. The battery is a bit large in size and is capable of retaining power for an extended period of time. This means that under proper usage, the battery can serve you well for a couple of days on a single charge.

Product Summary.

  • Excellent business features
  • Impressive QWERTY keyboard
  • Great HD screen
  • Good performance

  • A bit on the expensive side
  • Camera isn’t fantastic
  • Lacks FM radio (if you still use it)

Despite the few disadvantages that the BlackBerry Q5 has, it still stands out as one of the best smartphones available in the market today. With all its state-of-the-art features, you will surely not be disappointed.

  1. Lovely review, I am definitely going to opt for this phone once my contract has run out. BlackBerry’s are the best!

  2. Sorry but I don’t agree with this statement. BlackBerrys are not in the same class as the iPhone, in fact I don’t think they even come second anymore.
