Some of the Our IT Department team took a well-earned break, left the office and got a breath of fresh air (and water) with a SUP board session last week. The team met with Anni and Mike from FrangiPani SUP, a mobile stand up paddle board school. They ensured that everyone got proper direction and instruction so they could make the most out of their couple of hours on the water!
What is SUP?
Stand up paddle boarding is a sport that originated in Hawaii and stems from surfing. SUP uses a board similar to a surfboard and a long paddle. Almost like a hybrid of canoeing and surfing.
The water sports industry have seen a rise in interest in SUP. It’s becoming hugely popular water sport and in 2013 the Outdoor Foundation’s Outdoor Participation Report found that stand up paddling was the most popular activity among first-time participants as 56% of all first-time participants of outdoor activities in the last year.
Where can you SUP?
You can SUP anywhere there is water really, on canals, rivers, lakes or even the sea. But for our IT guys the Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park was the ideal spot for their first lesson.
Why should you try SUP?
- It’s great for keeping you fit
- It can improve your core-stability
- It can be relaxing as well as a workout
- It’s a lot more fun than going to the gym
